‘Gentlemen start your engines, and may the best woman win’ (RuPaul)

RuPaul’s drag race is a reality TV show in which drag queens compete against each other to become “America’s next drag superstar.” The show started in 2009 and is still going today, with its last series reaching the highest ratings yet. RuPaul and his panel of judges critique the queens, and decide who will be lip syncing to save themselves from leaving the competition.
This essay will explore RuPaul’s Drag Race looking at the representation of the LGBT community, how this is positive and negative. Looking at theorists including Butler (1990), Goffman (1956) and Dyer (2000). Also looking at the narrative and structure of the show. Including the theorists Todorov (1969) and Propp (1928.)
